Corridor Coffee’s owners, Max & Melissa, have been coffee connoisseurs since their teenage years. Whether it be coffee, wine, tea or all things culinary, they are pursuers of quality. “It is critical to us that our products and environment are of the highest quality. We bought this building, researched its history and developed the Corridor brand because we plan to be 'all-in' invested in the West Side for the long-term. Corridor will be a microcosm of what is happening on the West Side today - reinvestment & reinvigoration in the most happening side of town. It is critical to us that our customers and community have a consistently positive experience. We feel at home on the West Side, and Corridor is part of our home.”
We feel at home on the West Side, and Corridor is part of our home.”
The West Side genuinely has been Max’s home. He was raised on Powers NW and attended St. James Elementary School from 1986-1995. “I grew up back when kids rode their bikes every day. We would spend our days playing stickball in the alley or trying to score a can of spray paint. When I watched The Sandlot recently with my kids, I thought ‘wow, that was basically my 80's childhood’. I remember riding by 637 Stocking as a kid when it was dilapidated. The reinvigoration of the West Side is fantastic, and we are so grateful to be a part of it. My family has roots here. My grandmother grew up on Richards NW and attended Sacred Heart, and my mother grew up on Covell NW and went to Holy Spirit. Most of my life I have lived on the West Side.”
As an entrepreneur, Max is constantly meeting people in coffeehouses. “I’ve been drinking coffee since age 14,” he noted. “Of course, back then it was flavored with tons of cream and sugar (he prefers it black). Coffeehouses have become my de facto office. Corridor is a way for to combine business and passion in a community that I feel a connection with.”
Melissa is no stranger to the West Side either. Although she grew up in Traverse City, she has lived on the west side of Grand Rapids, less than a mile away from Corridor. “I was great being able to live in this area and be in walking distance to Monarch's Club, The Holiday Bar, and Blue Dog Tavern! I can’t wait to see how the West Side really comes into its own as more businesses move to the area.”
Although Melissa has a diverse background in international relations, anthropology and historic preservation, she has always enjoyed being able to serve her community on a more basic level. “One of my first jobs was working at Amical in Traverse City where I met some truly amazing people. Every time I go back I still see a friendly face and that’s what I want to provide to our customers.” Corridor is a realization of this dream.
Come as You Are

Whether you live in the neighborhood, across town, or are just passing through, we want you to know that you always have a place to go to relax and enjoy your favorite coffee or espresso drink.
“The West Side is the best side.”
Current and former neighbors all love the West Side’s lack of pretentiousness and sense of inclusion. Originally separated from downtown by the Grand River, the West Side developed its own independent character. Its energy and inspiration came from the immigrants who arrived in the 19th and 20th centuries, first the Irish, Germans, Poles, Lithuanians, and Dutch and, more recently, a growing Latino population.
The West Side’s past centered around wood products, factories, and churches, and its future is being built today by its residents and the many businesses that are opening their doors and putting out a shingle. We think you’ll agree that it’s an exciting time to be a part of the West Side!
